Not just any birth. And that because of the salvation available to us through Him as Savior, we have much to celebrate. "Jesus- Our Savior - Our Salvation" reminds us that our sinfulness was the reason Jesus came and thus the reason for the season. The sermon title "C and E Christians" noted that often "C and E" Christians are those people who only show up in church on Christmas and Easter. The holiday rituals are for the most part only rituals devoid of any life to them, and thus not really "holy days." Since we served communion on this Sunday, the sermon points out that communion reminds us that the baby born on Christmas is the same one who grew to become a man and was crucified and then rose again on Easter. Communion connects the C and E. Yes, "C and E Christians" are also those who know that the reason for the "C" was that the "E" event might bring us salvation. This sermon focuses on ways we are challenged to be thankful to God in today's world. Stories are shared that highlight that challenge. Also we are reminded that there are times when God uses our disappointments and failures to draw us closer to Him, so that we might experience Him in a supportive and new way. Thanksgiving is about Him and His love for us, and not necessarily the blessings we've received from Him (click here) http://www.seaviewbaptist.com/podcast/20071118.mp3

Today's sermon is based on Matthew 14:22-39 the story of the Jesus walking on the water and the disciples in the storm tossed boat. The sermon focuses on "the Crippling Power of Fear." The listener is challenged to find where they are in the story as they reflect on how it intersects their spiritual journey. Several options are suggested. The central theme is that God faithfulness to be with us through the storms of life is certain. Stories are shared and snapshots from the text are explored to reinforce the theme. Using St. Paul's defense before King Agrippa in Acts 26:13-23 as the foundation for a call to serving the Kingdom of God, Paul says he was sent to serve and to witness by bringing light into darkness and the power of God to replace the power of Satan. The sermon shows that such a call has also been received by our missionaries tody in far away places. It also points out the today's missionaries flesh out Hudson Taylor's comment to "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God" Six video clips are used to show and tell in the missionaries own words how God is using them and making a difference in the world today. It's the parable of the sower (sometimes called the parable of the soils.) Our foucs is of Jesus, the greatest storyteller who ever lived and the fact that his story is the greatest story ever told. We explore what THE STORY is, and then why that story is important to us today. The "what?", "What for?" are followed by the "So What?" and the challenge to tell the story today not only in song, but through our lives. Our word is hungry for "stories" and Jesus' Story is life giving. The story of the healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus. "When Faith Heals" explores the faith of the man who seemed to know and see Jesus better than even his disciples did. Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus knew his answer and was willing to take the consequences. The question for us today is two-fold: 1) De we know what we want Jesus to do for us? and 2) are we willing to live with the consequences if and when He does it. The role of faith is vital. " (Part 2). It continues the thoughts of the previous sermon on Romans 12. this message is based on Romans 12:9-31. Paul provides a series of challenges for christian living for relating with those inside the church, outside the church, and the world at large. the challenges often seem impossible to accomplish on our own, and they are, but with the help of Christ's Spirit we can atempt them with some success. The sermon walks through the text verse by verse and ends with the challenge of verse 31, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Paul has many "sound bites of wisdom" that describe the life of one willing to be transformed by the renewing of our minds" when we allow the "mercies of Christ" to become a part of our being. It comes after the first 11 chapters of Romans that focuses on the human condition, God's provision in Christ and the diffference he makes in the hope for humanity. Chapter 12 and following contains the practical outcomes for people who believe what paul spoke of in the first 11 chapters. He begins Romans 12:1 with the word "therefore". That word implies something that has gone before and that what is about to follow is a natural consequence of what has been said. He challenges the early church to live out it's inheritance; to live as people who are being changed on the inside being transformed and renewed in light of God's mercies for them in Jesus Christ. We're to be inner directed by God's Spirit rather than outer directed by the pressures andfashions of everyday life. Aiello is titled "God's House Salad" and is based on the text in Hebrews 10:19-25. On 5 occasions the author enourages the Christians to persevere using the phrase "Let us..." (lettuce). Hence the title. Each variation on the "let us" challenge is designed to strengthen the witness and faith of God's people in the face of doubt, confusion, suffering and persecution. Let us drawn near to God in faith; let us hold firmly to the hope, let us spur one another on toward love; let us not give up meeting together and let us encourage one another, make up the "salad." Also, a quote is used to remind the listener that the ears of faith cause him or her to hear the music of the Good News which sets his or her feet in motion and faithfulness. "Those who danced were thought quite insane by those who could not hear the music." This sermon challenges us to "hear the music" of God's love for us in Christ and to keep on dancing. It's noted that both Mark and John tell the story as well, but they both leave out the part about Peter. Here we see Peter challenging Jesus to prove who he says he is and in the process Peter begins to sing into the water. Jesus' 2 comments for the basis of this sermon. First he says "Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid." Words of hope and a reminder that he is always with us, no matter what the circumstance and the chaos of the situation. He was with Peter at that moment and not back on the shore as Peter assumed. Jesus also says "Why do you doubt, o you of little faith." Most often we consider this to be refering to the moment when Peter sinks into the water. this sermon suggests that Peter's doubting is rather demonstrated when he tests Jesus "if you really are who you say you are, then..." These words are very similar to what Satan says to Jesus back in Matt. chapter 4. Let us remember Jesus is always with us. that's the promise of this story. It's also about how God uses whatever means possible to get his good news to us, even outside our normal channels of authority. Naaman, a genearl of a foreign power, seeks healing from a prophet of God, Elisha, and gets it, but not the way he expected. He learns a lesson in humility that we all need to learn. Although it portrays a hated enemy in a positive light and thus confounds his hearers, Jesus makes his point that the definition of 'neighbor' is more about what you do than where you live. His techinque of questioning the questioner and of telling parables engages the reader and makes you want to hear how he brings it all together. 'Go and do likewise' challenges us to realize that we can be and ARE neighbors to anyone we help along life's journey. He reminds them that the God of Peace is reliable and will help them accomplish these imperatives as they walk cole to the Lord. http://www.seaviewbaptist.com/podcast/20070729.mp3 (click here)

This is the last in the series on THE FANTASTIC FOUR. Our focus is the Gospel of John who portrays Jesus as the Son of God. The readings are from John 1:29-49; 20:30-31 which show John's purpose to be that of dultivating belief in Jesus as God's Son. John has a cosmic perspective and encourages "belief" 98 times in his Gospel. His perspective is quite different from the other Gospels wherein he highlights the divinity of Christ moreso than his humanity. The "four" of course refers to the four Gospels. This week we look at the Gospel of Luke which promotes Jesus as a "perfect man." His perfection has to do with his attitude towards others. In this sermon we look at Luke 19:1-10 the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. Luke wrote for Gentile believers and almost believers, and he did so, so that they might have a certainty about their faith. Luke ofgten shows Jesus being concerned about the disinherited, the poor and those whom others tended to shun. We're looking at the theme of each of the four gospels and how they present Jesus to the reader and believer. This week we consider Mark: Jesus as Servant. The text is Mark 2:1-12, the story of the four men who bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus for healing, but encounter a crowd of people in the way preventing them from getting to Jesus. We consider the three facets of the story: the Jesus facet, the friends facet and the crowd facet. The challenge is to find ourselves in the story and reflect on how we can be more faithful in bringing people into the presence of Jesus with out getting "in the way." Their mission is to save the world from the evil ones. As Christians we too have a "fantastic four" in the Gospels. Their writers also have a mission - revealing God's love for the world in sending Jesus Christ. And of course his mission is also to save the world. This series of sermons will consider the central message or theme of each of the fastanstic four Gospels. This sermon is based on Matthew 27 and the many comments regarding Jesus as "King of the Jews." The title is: 1. Jesus as King. (Each week we'll explore a different Gospel writer's theme to gain a multi-perspective understanding of the One we call Lord and Savior. )

This is the 4th in the series "UNWRAPPING YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS." 4. Deploying Yours... This sermon reminds us that after we discover and develop our spiritual gifts the challenge is to use them, practice them, deploy them for building up the kingdom of God and the church of Jesus Christ. It's suggested that we study the gifts, pray for guidance as to how when and where he wants us to use the gifts. Testing the waters is suggested. The learning curve is also described with 4 parts to it: "I don't know that I don't know," to "I know that I don't know," to "I know that I know," and finally to "I don't know that I don't know."

St. Paul suggests that the right way to use the gifts you have is "in love" and "to the glory of God." A video clip of a scene from EVAN ALMIGHTY is used in the sermon to demonstrate that God wants us to use the gifts in situations that call out for that gift to be used. If your gift is 'service" God doesn't zap you with a service gene, but rather puts you in a position or circumstance where you can use it if you choose to. May your gifts be used always for the building up of the Kingdom of God through the Church. When you became a Christian you received a spiritual inheritance unique to you for service to the Lord. Your inheritance is in the form of "spiritual gifts" that equip you as part of the body of Christ. As you discover and develop your gifts, you can then use them for the building up of the Body of Christ and the Kingdom of God on earth. DEVELOPING YOUR GIFTS reminds us that we are not on a "cruise ship" but rather a "battleship". We're not just along for the ride to have fun, but every person onboard has a specific function or purpose that will help the "ship" reach it's destination and fulfill it's mission. The title is "Discovering Yours." It's based on Romans 12:3-8, and the seven motivational gifts described by Paul. Wach of the seven gifts is described, an "inventory of gifts" was made avaialbe to everyone present. The inventory asked 70 questions which when answered helps a person discover their gift mix. The sermon also reminds us of the importance of discovering your gift mix. The goal is to become the person God has created you to be by serving in ways that will bring you fulfillment and fruitfulness as you do your part to build up the body of Christ. Today we begin the process of understanding, discovering, developing and deploying our "spiritual gifts" to strengthen our faith and to build up the body of Christ, the Church.

This sermon is based on Ephesians 4:6-8; I Cor 12:1; and 1 Peter 4:10-11. The Ephesians passage identifies the role of the pastor/teacher as one of "equipping the people of God for works of service in building up the Church of God." One first step in that effort is to understand that when we became Christians God gave each of us "spiritual gifts" to be used for His service.

The challenge of every believer is to learn what one's spiritual gifts are, and then to develop them and use them to strengthen the Church. Indeed true satisfaction, fulfillment and fruitfulness comes only as one uses his/her "gifts" in service to God. When we don't serve out of our "gift mix" we easily get burnt out and find little satisfaction in our acts of service. This first sermon in the series is titled, "WE ALL HAVE GIFTS... TO GIVE." Richard Wingate. It's entitled, "Here I Raise My What?... (My Ebenezer!) The sermon focuses on the importance of remembering. The people of God in the Old Testament "remembered" God's hand at work in their journey to the promised land and time and time again were called to remembering God's ongoing faithfulness.

The Memorial Day tie-in challenges us to also remember the blessings that are ours today because of the sacrifices of others willing to die for their country and who are dying even today to preserve our freedoms. Of course, remembering the cost of our salvation is what empowers us to remain faithful to the God who created us and sent His Son to give His life for us. A vivid portrayal of God as a shepherd to a shepherd. A timely reminder of God's protection, guidance, and provision for those in his care. The psalmist's declaration is further reinforced as we remember that Jesus was known as "the good shepherd." Just as a shepherd goes ahead of the sheep to spot dangerous terrian or to keep the sheep safe from poisonous plants, scorpions and wild animals, so to does our Lord watch out for us. Indeed, he persus us with goodness and mercy (unfailing love) all the days of our lives. As we walk through the Psalm, we move from his "crying out from the depths" to his ultimate deliverance in "in your Word do I hope." It's about the journey from disappointment to deliverance. The psalmist senses his alienation from God, and then upon reflection realizes God is a God of forgiveness. This gives him hope that the relationship can be restored. Indeed, he believes that the hope he has is also a hope that is available to all God's people. Truly, our ultimate hope is in the faithfulness of our God to keep us in the palm of His hand. It's the first in a three part series on the Psalms. In this Psalm the writer realizes that there are times when he feels his spirit is heavy and his energy is sapped. He realizes that the cause of this is his distance from God and that God has given him an antidote. Prayer and more specifically confession can lead to the renewed sense of freedom and forgiveness he craves. When forgivenss is experienced, his spirit soars, he realizes how blessed he truly is, and joy returns to his life.

This can be our experience as we spend time reflecting on, responding to and resting in the thoughts of this Psalm. Read it over several times and allow it to minister to your spirit with it's profound truth. The reality of getting stuck in a "Sunday Night mentality" when the disciples saw Jesus being crucified, then hearing rumors of his resurrection, but having no experience yet of the risen Christ caused them to live in fear. John 20:19-31 explores the journey from doubt and fear to joy and faith. A spiritual journey we're all on daily. As you listen to this sermon reflect on your own journey of overcoming doubt and finding a certainty of the presence of the living Christ in your life. It's based on Acts 9:1-20 where the call of Saul (St. Paul) is first described and the role of Ananias is revealed. Ananias appeared ready to be used by God until he learned of the task and then he declared "You must be kidding. You're not serious are you?" We too, appear ready to serve, and then find excuses for not serving, being faithful or obedient. However, Ananias undergoes a transformation and eventually answers God's call to serve. In so doing, he goes to Saul and greets him as "Brother Saul." Truly a step of faith for him as he is used by God in a very special way. The focus is on the spiritual discipline of "Prayer". The 5 postures of prayer are discussed and suggested as ways to enhance your prayer experience; the 4 kinds of prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication are explored as additional ways to expand your prayer repetoire. And the practice of "breath prayers" is taught and experienced. Breath prayers have two parts: as you breathe in you think of a Biblical Word for God (Lord, Shepherd Divine Healer are some suggestions) As you breathe out you think of and pray a God-given desire (have mercy on me, fill my mind with your love, grant me peace of mind, etc.)
The traditional historic "Jesus Prayer" Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner. is one such breath prayer. Many others are suggested and practiced during this sermon. Breath prayers can be for your self or for others. they are designed to bring you into the presence of the Lord. They bring a deep sense of nearness to God. they are brief simple prayers of "being" rather than "doing." The spiritual discipline of "compassion" is explored in the life and ministry of Jesus. In many of the verses that describe Jesus' compassion we see the three step process of : He saw; He felt their pain; He took action. As we seek to make space in our lives for God through the discipline of compassion we learn that though there are many ways we can reach out to others and provide for their need; Jesus saw the crowds of people from a spiritual perspective.

Today's text is Matthew 9:35-38 where "Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on them because they were harrassed and helpless, as sheep without a shepherd." It was their aimlessness, confusion, frustration and oppression that drew his compassion. It was their spiritual amnesia that caused him to want to touch their lives with his gift of faith. The spiritual practice esplored is "Hearing from God." The focus is on the role of Bible Study in the life of the believer. Bible Study engages the mind to discern what God said to the people of the Bible so that we might better understand what it means for us today. In the process of doing Bible Study, which must be intentional, we experience the living Christ and hear His will for us today. Three methods of doing Bible Study are highlighted. Each of them asks key questions of the scriptures. Also, Bible Study is differentiated from "devotional reading" of the scriptures. It seems life today is designed for privacy and lonliness in our society. There is a push-pull experience of wanting to be part of a group, but at the same time being wary due to "trust" issues and the risk of being vulnerable. Yet, the Bible is filled with directions for us to be involved in "one-anothering." The idea being, that as we "encourage one another," "love one another," "bear with one another," in communities of faith that care for one another, we'll not only find our identity in Christ, but we'll also come to know the Lord more fully. The Christian faith is not a solo act. The first two ways (disciplines) included 1. Worship, 2. Slowing Down. This message focuses on the practice of "Detachment." Letting Go and Letting God. That is relinquishing those things in our lives that we feel form our identity and finding our ultimate identity in Christ. The text is Luke 12:13-21, the parable of the rich fool who found his identity in his possessions and declared that his real problem was one of storage for his goods, rather than his understanding of the purpose of his having those goods. This sermon is about our accumulating of "stuff" , building more and more places to store our stuff, and then thinking that our "stuff" defines who we are. Using the letter "O" from the word "WORSHIP" we focus on "Openness to God." Although there are many spiritual disciplines we may practice to achieve "openness," we focus on "Slowing Down" in this message.

The reality of life today is that we live a true 24/7 existence that is hard to escape. Our lives are too crowded and we're in a "hurry mode" all the time. This sermon proclaims that just as we cannot cultivate relationships with people without taking the time, similarly we cannot cultivate a friendship with God "on the go." This makes "slowing down" a spiritual issue and practice. What are the benefits and implications of slowing down for the believer? What are some easy ways of slowing down that can remind us of this spiritual need in our lives? Today's sermon is titled "Worship: Valuing the Right Stuff. Together we explore what it means to "worship" and the importance of worship for the human spirit. The reality of "we worship what we value" causes us to ask what is important to us. We noted that it's possible to worship secondary things such as success, money, possessions, people and power among other things, and the dangers of such. We also noted that it's possible to attend a "worship service" and not worship God at all. As Jesus said, "You honor me with your lips but your hearts are far from me." (Matt 7)

The text for the day is from Exodus 7:14-8:3 which is the beginning of the story of Moses confrontations with Pharoah, and the 10 plagues. Each time Moses went to Pharoah he said, "The Lord God says, "Let my people go, so that they MAY WORSHIP ME." Worship was vital to God's people then as it was to Jesus later. During his temptations Satan offered Jesus the world, but he responded "It is written, Worship the Lord your God alone, and serve Him." Jesus used this question of help him address the core values of the people he spoke to. The question is used several times in the gospels. If the question was asked of us (and it is) what would our answer be? The "greatest desire" is probably different for everyone, and yet according to Scripture, the greatest need (desire) we have is to have God in our lives - specifically a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As Psalm 42:1-2 says, "You Alone are my heart's desire."

How does one have this "living relationship?" By making space in our lives for God. The Bible offers dozens of ways (practices) to do this. Several are mentioned in this sermon, but during Lent ( for the next 7 weeks) we'll look in more depth at "Seven Ways to Make Space in Your Life for God." The reason this is important is because may people are so busy that they have all but squeezed God out of their lives all together. These "practices" will help us re-connect with God in life-fulfilling ways. Each identifies a "call" in the life of one of God's people of faith; Isaiah and Simon Peter respectively. The audio begins with a brief musical interlude of "Thy Word is a Lamp unto my
Feet." In this sermon we explore the situation Isaiah and Peter find them selves in as they realize they are in the Presence of the Divine. They each realize their utter humanness and sinfulness in the face of such Awesomeness. In each case they experience forgiveness and are given a call to serve the Lord. Peter is called to become a fisher or men. Each is assured that God will be with them to encourage them along the way. Such a call and promise is available to us today as well. The sermon closes with a video clip (which you can only hear) of a coach challenging his team (and one specific player who displays a defeatist attitude even before the game starts) to give their best. He has the apathetic player do an exercise called the death crawl (this is where the player walks on all fours (hands and feet) without letting his knees touch the ground while he carries another player on his back.) The challenge is to do 50 yards...but most players can only do 30 yards. When the player finally ends the challenge he has gone 100 yards because of the continual motivations of the coach. The video is called "WHOLEHEARTED" and is from sermonspice dot com. While he teaches there the people begin to sense that his teachings have authority and power. The message explores the "authority figures" in our lives, and what it means for Jesus to have authority in a person's life today. Is Jesus merely a kind of "rabbit's foot," or "Aladin's lamp" in our lives, or is he really Lord? It's not hard to tell, just look at your levels of committment to him with your time, talents, treasure. Jesus goes to the synagogue, reads from the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1-2 and then proclaims "Today" this Scriptuer is fullfilled. The sermon explores the importance of the concept "today", what it menas in the text, how it's used of Jesus in other parts of Luke, and it's implications for how we live in the world "today". It's a call to action now, a call to realize that every day is a "today" when Jesus is present. John's Gospel differs from Matthew Mark and Luke in that it presents Jesus as the resurrected Christ. And it indicates the cosmic nature of the Savior who was involved in the very creation of the world. John tells us that this Christ was neither recognized nor received by most. However, he was received by some who believed and those who believed became "Children of God." We noted too that the most profound theological statement in the entire Gospel is in verse 14. "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us..." That's the Good News we need for this new year. This truth is confused sometimes by the many "fantasy" characters like "Frosty," "Rudolph," "Snoopy," and others. Jesus' birth in a manger made him accesssible to everyone even including the lowly shepherds. The sermon focuses on the "manger scene" and suggests that just as the manger was actually a feeding place, Jesus continues to nourish our spirits even today if we'll feast on him by faith with thanksgiving. that feasting is symbolized in the italian word "manga" which means to eat. Dr. Vernl Mattson, area minister of ABCNJ. He speaks from Acts 2:42-45 about the practices of the early church which lead to it's sustained growth. He relates ways churches are growing today and the 7 marks of a healthy congregation. This service was followed by a luncheon and a survey to measure how we perceive our congregational health and faithfulness. The results of the survey will inform our next steps as a church toward better faithfulness and health in 2007. The sermon explores things we anticipate in life and look forward to and then, considers how we who follow Jesus should be celebrating this "Advent" season knowing what is coming. That is, God's blessings in Christ. The author reminds the readers (and us) that we must continue to: 1) Hold unswervingly to the hope we profess; 2) Consider how we may spur one another on to acts of love and good deeds; 3) to not give up meeting together; and 4) to encourage one another in the faith. And he indicates that we are to do all these things because "He who promised is faithful." We live in a world and culture that denies much of what the Church stands for in our society. We need encouragers and are called to be encouragers. The Truth is that the "meetings" we plan and hold are all designed to "encourage" those who attend in their faithfulness. Nehemiah called the people to put away mourning and grief over their having disappointed God, and to allow the "Joy of the Lord to Be their Strength." This sermon is ultimately about joy and celebration by the believer because of the amazing nature of the God we worship. There was a 2 minute video shown during the sermon of people celebrating in various ways after sinking difficult putts on the golf course. You won't be able to see the video clip, but you can enjoy the music playing in the background while the video was showing. The reality is that if we want God to do something for us to bring about change in our lives, we're going to undergo some adjustments in our behavior and beliefs if God is really going to touch our "blindness." Jesus said He "came to serve not be served." The challenge of the Christian life today is to live a life of service to the Lord by serving others. However our culture values "self" above "service." An extensive illustration is taken from the current movie, "The Guardian" in exploring this theme. The title "A Step of Faith" speaks to the issue that the "rich young man" had to face. Namely, that though he'd led an exemplary life by observing many of the laws "from his youth." he was still lacking in one area. That was the area of his "relationship" with God. Evidently, his goodness was based on ritual and rules, not on his love for God. Jesus suggested that the man's possessions possessed him and thus another step was to be taken before he could know what eternal life was all about. He asked him to take a step of faith. So too,we are asked if we are willing to give "all" to him and to follow him, no matter what. It's based on the text 2 Corinthians 1:3-7. The word comfort is used 6 times in this text. Another translation for that word is "encourage." The Truth of our Christian experience is that God comforts us in many ways, and we are challenged to be comforters (encouragers) of one another as we seek to live God honoring lives. It's titled "Random Acts for Good or Ill." Jesus disciples find themselves telling Jesus that they've stopped a man from healing another man in Jesus name. Their reason was that "he was not one of us." Such an attitude reflects the mistaken notion that only Jesus disciples have the Truth and can be used of God. Jesus' answer, "If they are not against us, then they are for us," shows an open attitude to the power of God to use any and all people who place themselves in His hands for good. The challenge is for us not to errect barriers where Jesus is building bridges. We are privileged to overhear him praying for that church. The thought then, is what if we overheard others praying for us, or if they overheard us praying for them? Even better, let us not miss out on the joy of hearing others pray for us, nor of allowing them to hear us pray for them. Praying aloud with others is a resource that is all but forgotten as an experience in the church today. May God give us a boldness to claim this blessing once again, for as we do, Christ's Spirit will strengthen us in His service daily.
