This week's sermon is based on Matthew's reading of the story of Jesus (and Peter) walking on the water in Matthew 14:22-36. It's noted that both Mark and John tell the story as well, but they both leave out the part about Peter. Here we see Peter challenging Jesus to prove who he says he is and in the process Peter begins to sing into the water. Jesus' 2 comments for the basis of this sermon. First he says "Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid." Words of hope and a reminder that he is always with us, no matter what the circumstance and the chaos of the situation. He was with Peter at that moment and not back on the shore as Peter assumed. Jesus also says "Why do you doubt, o you of little faith." Most often we consider this to be refering to the moment when Peter sinks into the water. this sermon suggests that Peter's doubting is rather demonstrated when he tests Jesus "if you really are who you say you are, then..." These words are very similar to what Satan says to Jesus back in Matt. chapter 4. Let us remember Jesus is always with us. that's the promise of this story.
